| Rancho Santa Fe, CA - Everyone in business, management, direct sales, or network marketing makes a living by building relationships. And, in order to develop any relationship, people must communicate. According to Mary-Ellen Drummond, "Whether we realize it or not, every time we speak, unless we’re talking to

In a survey conducted last year by Drummond, president
of Polished Presentations International, she found that
the majority of people "fear exactly what they
need most for achieving success - public speaking
confidence." Drummond asked more than 50,000
people throughout the United States, including many in
direct sales, specific questions about their
communication skills. She found that out of the 50,000
people surveyed, fewer than 3% admit to never feeling
shy or never having a fear of public speaking. Only
1-2% like the sound of their own voice. And, only 1
out of 500 people (.02%) admit to liking their own
videotape when taped in training sessions. (Or: She
found out that of the 50,000 people surveyed, more than
97% admitted to feeling shy or having a fear of public
speaking at some time, more than 98% of people dislike
hearing their own voice, and, only 1 out of 500 people
(.02%) like to see themselves when videotaped in
training sessions.)
"These percentages are very telling," says Drummond.
"People need and want to feel more confident in
order to project greater competence and credibility with
potential clients. And it's the impression left by
communication skills that matters most when building
relationships and sales success," says Drummond.
This tells us that when people are looking for ways to
improve and grow their sales and businesses, they should
start by improving their communication skills.
